SUMMER PESTS IN SOUTH GEORGIA

WHAT PESTS SHOULD YOU LOOK OUT FOR THIS SUMMER?

In South Georgia’s summer heat, our most annoying and least popular pest is the mosquito. Georgia’s hot, muggy, and humid summers make it the perfect place for mosquitos to thrive. You will often find them around any body of water, no matter the size, and in your lawns where it’s damp and dark.

SO, WHAT CAN BE DONE TO GET RID OF THESE PESKY GUYS?

  • Use fans! The speed and wind from fans often confuse mosquitoes about where to go. They can also help diffuse the carbon monoxide that humans exhale, which initially attracts mosquitoes in the first place.
  • Lighting citronella candles. The oil in these candles helps mask the scents that mosquitoes are attracted to.

Although these two solutions are not a permanent fix, they can be helpful while hosting an evening event.

WHAT OTHER PESTS ARE THERE DURING SOUTH GEORGIA’S SUMMERS?

Roaches can be a big problem in the summer months down south, and you may notice more than usual around your home. When the temperature rises, their appetites, and reproductive rates increase, resulting in a bigger population.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU’RE NOTICING ROACHES IN OR AROUND YOUR HOME?

Just like mosquitoes, cockroaches also thrive in wet areas as they rely on water to survive. The most effective way to keep them away is to fix any leaks or water damage in and around your home. Roaches love the heat outside but will take any opportunity to sneak in between cracks and crevices in your house seeking food and water. Seal any small openings around your home to keep these pests outside where they belong.

FIRE ANTS ARE MORE ACTIVE IN THE SUMMER IN SOUTH GEORIGA, SO WHAT PREVENTIONS CAN YOU TAKE?

Fire Ants were exported to the US from Africa in the 1930s and since then have made Southeast Georgia their home away from home! You will find their hills almost anywhere in our area. Don’t fret, there are still things you can do that will help keep them at bay.

Keeping your lawn cut and clean will significantly help as fire ants like to build their hills in debris and under structures. Regularly be aware of spilled drinks, food, or garbage left in your yard.
